What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted bacteria-like parasite that is very common, especially among teens and young adults.  Because of this, people who have sexual partners should be tested at least once a year, even if they feel healthy. 

Chlamydia is dangerous for many reasons: 

In Women: 

• Infections can spread to the fallopian tubes.
• Fallopian tubes may become scarred and permanently painful.
• Scarring in the fallopian tubes may cause dangerous tubal pregnancies, resulting in miscarriage or maternal death. 
• Scarring in the fallopian tubes can prevent a woman from ever becoming pregnant. 

• If left untreated, chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which can cause scarring in the fallopian tubes. 

 In men:

• Infects the urethra and may spread to the testicles, causing epididymitis.

• Chlamydia can also lead to reactive arthritis.  One in three men who develop reactive arthritis become permanently disabled.

• In rare cases it can cause sterilization (inability to have children). 

Chlamydia is the most common and most invisible sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the U.S.  At least three million American men and women become infected every year.  Luckily, chlamydia is easy to test for and treat.

If symptoms do occur, they appear in 7 to 21 days.  If your partner is a man, and he has a urinary tract infection, you may have chlamydia.

Common Symptoms:

• discharge from the penis or vagina
• pain or burning while urinating, frequent urination
• excessive vaginal bleeding
• bleeding between periods
• painful intercourse for women, or pain in lower belly during sex
• spotting between periods or after intercourse
• abdominal pain, nausea, fever
• inflammation of the rectum or cervix

• swelling or pain in the testicles

How chlamydia is spread:

• vaginal and anal intercourse
• from the birth canal to the fetus
• rarely, from the hand to the eye

*Testing is the only sure way to detect Chlamydia and cure it!

Treatment with antibiotics for positive Chlamydia tests are prescribed to both patient and partner (even if the partner is not present or has not been tested).
